The Ministry received the amount of USD 1 Million / MWK 1.73 Billion as financial aid for the Humanitarian Emergency Response to the 2025/26 Lean Season. Upon signing an agreement with the African Development Bank.
On behalf of the Government and people of Malawi, the Minister expressed sincere appreciation to the African Development Bank. Stating that this assistance will contribute meaningfully to the National lean Season Food Insecurity Response Program, aiding in alleviating hunger among the most vulnerable communities.
Due to the La Nina-induced weather shocks which resulted in reduced agricultural production and heightened vulnerability among many households. It has been observed, due to national assessments, over four million Malawians are projected to be food insecure during the 2025/26 consumption year, necessitating urgent humanitarian intervention.
The Minister continued to say this support addresses immediate humanitarian needs, underscoring the importance of strengthening long-term resilience to climate shocks.
Furthermore he stated the Government remains committed to work with African Development Bank along with other partners investing in sustainable solutions enhancing food security and climate resilience in line with Malawi's 2063 Vision.
The signing of this agreement today, stands as a symbol of strong partnership, solidarity, and shared commitment towards protecting lives and livelihoods of the people of Malawi.
